Liverpool will enter next season under a new head coach after Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot, but former star Robbie Fowler still believes that winning the Premier League title should be the main goal.
After winning the Premier League title in his first season, Slot saw his credibility take a hit last year as Liverpool struggled for consistency. Slot was already overseeing a transition after the most expensive summer transfer window in the club's history, but lost his job at the end of the season.
Iraola has already impressed after his first game in charge of Liverpool, and did so without a full roster, as Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo have only just reported back to training. Although Liverpool finished fifth last season, Fowler believes that the club should still aim to win the title.
Fowler spoke with Liverpool.com in New York City ahead of Wednesday's preseason game against Wrexham at Yankee Stadium. The Liverpool legend was asked about his realistic season goals, and claimed that Iraola must go all out.
"I mean, we’re Liverpool. Every season, you’ve got to be ambitious and say we’re going to win the league. Whether you do that or not, that’s a different matter," Fowler said.
"You’ve got to remember we are Liverpool. Let’s be big, let’s be bold, let’s be ambitious. We’re in to win the league. Okay, it’s going to be tough, but we’ve got to have that attitude because you’re playing (for) this badge."

Fowler believes that Iraola's high-intensity style of play is just what Liverpool needs, with his tactics compared to Jurgen Klopp's approach. Fowler acknowledged that the fans grew frustrated with Slot's style and hopes that Iraola will lift the crowd once again.
"Good start, the intensity and the levels were probably missing last year," Fowler added. "I don’t want to speak bad of Arne, but I think there was a point where we’re watching Liverpool and it was fairly evident that something needed to happen in terms of the team being proactive and getting on the front foot.
"I think the fans need that to give them a little bit of a lift as well. We’ve seen many times in the past how those supporters can drag that team, and if you’ve got that front foot defending and attacking football team, it’s fairly easy for the support to get behind."

Iraola's style is exciting, and he has a much better squad to work with than he did at Bournemouth. However, he hasn't managed in a European competition, and Fowler believes that Liverpool doesn't currently have the depth required to meet Iraola's demands.

"At the minute, no. I think he’s come out himself and said he needs players and he wants players," Fowler said. "I’m sure the club will be delving into every opportunity to make that right.
"But player-wise, I’m not sure who’s going to come in. There’s a little bit of time in the window, I’m sure players will come in. When they’ll come in, I don’t know.
"I’m a Liverpool fan, and like every Liverpool fan, you want to see players come in."
