Alisson started every game for Brazil at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo returned to Liverpool training at the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday as they began their pre-season preparations.
The Netherlands internationals were given extra time off by Andoni Iraola after their World Cup campaign, which ended with a penalty defeat to Morocco in the last-32 stage.

Iraola said last week: “They will, in terms of dates of training, be very similar but they will start training at the AXA in Liverpool.
“Because of different reasons, especially Virgil because he has been the player with most minutes in Europe I would say, and Cody for other reasons, they are going to start training basically in the same week as the others but instead of making them come here with the team, we considered that it was sensible with them to start the first week training with a small group or even with younger players that are at the AXA and join us when we [return].”
Instead of joining the squad in the United States for Wednesday’s friendly against Wrexham, Van Dijk and Gakpo resumed training at Kirkby and are expected to feature against Monaco at Anfield on August 9.
Gakpo was granted additional leave on compassionate grounds, while Van Dijk was given extra recovery time after featuring more minutes than any other Liverpool player last season before appearing in all four of the Netherlands’ 2026 World Cup matches.
Ryan Gravenberch has already returned to training alongside Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak in Chicago, with the trio available for selection against Wrexham.
According to the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, Alisson Becker is expected to return later this week or early next week after representing Brazil at the World Cup.
The goalkeeper started every game as Brazil exited at the last-16 stage and made 35 appearances across all competitions last season despite an injury-hit campaign.
Earlier this summer, Alisson was linked with a move to Juventus, but Liverpool stood firm and made it clear they had no intention of selling the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Since joining from Roma in 2018, Alisson has become a fan favourite at Anfield and is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers of the Premier League era.
The 33-year-old has won numerous individual and team honours during his time with Liverpool and still has plenty to offer at the highest level.
