Luis Enrique wants players who are fully committed. Barcola, meanwhile, has caused a headache in Paris by refusing to sign a contract extension. Asked about his future earlier this month, the young Frenchman dodged the question completely, claiming his mind was only on the World Cup before making any decision.
Over at Anfield, Andoni Iraola has been plain-spoken. He needs another wide player before the transfer window shuts. Yet despite Arsenal walking away, Liverpool look reluctant to hand over a club-record fee. Getting this deal over the line is far from straightforward.

Ability is not the issue here. The lad can play. Price is the sticking point. Barcola remains one of the finest young wide attackers in European football. Look at his numbers. Across the 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign, he scored 11 goals and set up another in 29 appearances. Add two goals and four assists in Europe as PSG secured a second consecutive Champions League title, and you see the appeal. He carried that form onto the international stage too, netting three times and providing one assist during France’s World Cup run.
Even so, Liverpool should resist PSG’s asking price. Squad construction matters. Iraola needs a genuine right-sided winger following Mohamed Salah’s departure. Barcola operates most naturally from the left. Liverpool already have Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo competing for minutes in that exact spot. Spending £145 million on another left-sided attacker creates an expensive imbalance instead of solving Liverpool’s biggest tactical need.
His numbers deserve context as well. Barcola exploded during 2024/25, but his latest domestic campaign was noticeably quieter despite playing for the dominant side in France. PSG appear to have inflated their valuation off the back of a strong World Cup and general market inflation, rather than consistent league production.

Liverpool should admire the player from afar and keep their wallet shut. Barcola would improve almost any attack in world football, no question. Spending £145 million represents poor value for someone who does not naturally fill the position Iraola needs most. Liverpool gain far greater balance by investing that money in a specialist right winger and strengthening other areas of the squad, rather than letting PSG’s valuation dictate their transfer strategy.
