£80m Man Utd target likely to join Chelsea, Blues have made initial offer

Manchester United are currently looking for a third midfield signing this summer.

The Red Devils have already recruited Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to bolster their midfield, but they are aiming for another recruit in the department.

Scott has been mentioned as a target in recent weeks, but The Athletic claim that Chelsea are seen as the likeliest destination if Bournemouth sanction his transfer.

The Blues have already had a £64 million bid turned down for the Englishman, and the Cherries continue to insist that the 22-year-old is not for sale this summer.

United unlikely to compete with Chelsea for Scott

United have already spent £80m on Santos and Tielemans. Kobbie Mainoo was the regular number eight during the back end of last season under manager Michael Carrick.

One would expect him to continue in the position. Mason Mount will likely be Mainoo’s backup. We could see Santos and Tielemans competing for the defensive midfield slot.

Hence, it does appear United may make a huge outlay on a third midfield signing. They are unlikely to splash the cash on Scott, who may not be an assured starter next term.

Chelsea have already failed with a £64m offer for the Englishman. While the Cherries insist that he is not for sale, their stance could change if the package rises to around £80m.

Scott has just turned down a new contract beyond June 2028. The South Coast outfit could eventually be tempted to sell instead of losing him for a knockdown price next summer.

United may not spend over the odds on him, but his desire to join Chelsea is another deal-breaker.

The club’s hierarchy may not want to pursue a player who is not fully committed to the project.
