On this day, Liverpool made a significant signing that would shape the club’s future success. Roger Hunt, a player from the non-league club Stockton Heath, which later became Warrington Town, joined the ranks of Liverpool. Hunt made an immediate impact, debuting a little over a month later and scoring in the Second Division victory over Scunthorpe at Anfield. He concluded that season as Liverpool’s top scorer, a feat he repeated in the 1961/62 season by netting 41 League goals in 41 appearances, a club record that still stands. Hunt was Liverpool’s top scorer for eight consecutive seasons, amassing a total of 285 goals in 492 league and cup matches, a club record until Ian Rush surpassed it. His 245 goals in 404 league matches remain a club record. Notably, Hunt scored the first-ever goal broadcast on the ‘Match of the Day’ programme. During his tenure at Anfield, which lasted until December 1969 when he transferred to Bolton, Hunt won two League Championship medals, a Second Division Championship medal, and an FA Cup winners’ medal. He also earned a World Cup winners’ medal with England in 1966, cementing his status as a Liverpool legend.
