Arsenal’s search for another elite wide forward has become increasingly complicated after Bradley Barcola reportedly gave his verbal approval to join Liverpool.
According to L’Equipe, the Paris Saint-Germain winger has agreed in principle to a move to Anfield after speaking with Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola and senior figures at the club.
Although no contract has been signed and negotiations between Liverpool and PSG are ongoing, Liverpool have moved into a commanding position in the race for the France international.
The biggest obstacle remains PSG’s valuation.
Recent reports indicate the Ligue 1 champions are seeking at least €120 million for Barcola, with some claims suggesting they could ultimately hold out for a figure closer to €170 million given his age, contract length and growing status as one of Europe’s premier young forwards.
That lofty asking price has so far prevented a breakthrough between the clubs despite Barcola’s willingness to make the switch.
For Arsenal, the latest development represents another setback in the search for a marquee addition out wide.
The reigning Premier League champions have explored several elite attacking options this summer as Mikel Arteta looks to further strengthen the squad that lifted the title last season.
Barcola has long been admired at the Emirates Stadium because of his explosive pace, direct dribbling and ability to operate anywhere across the front three.
However, Arsenal have consistently shown they are unwilling to abandon their disciplined recruitment model.
The timing is also significant because Arsenal’s pursuit of Vinicius Junior appears to be losing momentum.
Real Madrid remain determined to tie the Brazil international to a new contract despite an ongoing salary dispute, with Jose Mourinho continuing to view the winger as a cornerstone of his project in the Spanish capital.
With Vinicius looking increasingly likely to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu and Barcola now favouring Liverpool, Arsenal’s two most ambitious wide targets appear to be slipping out of reach.
That could force Andrea Berta and Arteta to accelerate work on alternative options before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal have demonstrated throughout the summer that they are prepared to invest heavily in elite talent, but only when they believe the financial terms represent value.
Unless Liverpool’s negotiations with PSG unexpectedly collapse, Barcola now looks considerably closer to Anfield than the Emirates, leaving Arsenal to reassess their options in the hunt for one final statement signing in attack.
