Arsenal midfielder Laila Harbert has completed a permanent transfer to San Diego Wave. The 19-year-old has signed through the 2029 NWSL season, ending her decade-long association with the north London club.
Harbert joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of nine and progressed through the club’s youth sides. She signed her first professional contract in January 2025.
Once a Gunner, always a Gunner.

Laila Harbert transfer ends long Arsenal spell
Harbert made her first senior appearance during Arsenal’s friendly against the A-League All Stars Women in Melbourne in May 2024.
She continued her development through loan spells with Watford and Southampton before gaining experience in the United States with Portland Thorns. Harbert made five regular-season NWSL appearances during her time in Oregon.
The defensive midfielder spent the second half of last season with Everton. Her permanent move to San Diego should now provide a clearer route to regular senior football.
San Diego Wave confirmed that Harbert has joined until the end of the 2029 season. Sporting director Camille Ashton praised her technical quality, vision and composure under pressure.
Harbert has also represented England throughout the youth age groups. She captained the under-17 side at the 2024 European Championship and World Cup, before starting every match as England’s under-19s qualified for the 2026 Under-20 World Cup.
Her departure continues a considerable summer reshaping of Renée Slegers’ squad. ReadArsenal previously examined Arsenal Women’s extensive turnover, which has included several established players leaving alongside a series of senior arrivals.
Arsenal thanked Harbert for her contribution and wished her well in the United States. The midfielder will now continue her career with a San Diego side investing in her long-term development.
