Chelsea are looking to start off a new era under Xabi Alonso. The 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in pre-season showed a team with attacking promise but with a lot of work to do defensively. Not everybody had a great day though. And could one such player be headed for Newcastle United this summer?
Joao Pedro scored a hat-trick. New arrival Dastan Satpaev found the back of the net as well. Goals also came from Dario Essugo and Jamie Gittens.
After the match, news has also broken that Chelsea are set to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion. Even though he is 35 years of age, the former Manchester United and Arsenal man remains a consistent goalscorer at the Premier League level, reaching double digits in each of the last two seasons.
So, Welbeck could be an excellent cover option to Pedro. On the other hand, some of the club’s other strikers might be heading for the exit. One of them is on the radar of Newcastle United.
Newcastle United in talks to sign Chelsea player
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Liam Delap’s representatives are in talks with several Premier League clubs. Everton are the frontrunners to sign him.
However, Newcastle United, who had looked at Delap before his move to Chelsea last summer, are also said to have reopened discussions about his signing. The Magpies remain interested in signing a striker this summer and have been kept informed of the Chelsea player’s availability.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Delap. The game against Western Sydney Wanderers was an opportunity for him to impress. But once again, he failed to meet expectations.
Not only did Delap not score, but overall, he was one of Chelsea’s weaker players in a lineup filled with academy talents. That just goes to show how difficult things have been for him lately.
Would Delap be a good signing for Newcastle?
Earlier in the summer, there had been suggestions that Delap was eager to stay and fight for his place at Chelsea. But, if you ask me, the best thing for him might be to move and try to resurrect his career elsewhere.
It is clearly not going to work out for him at Chelsea. If he stays, he might even find himself as the fourth or fifth-choice striker at the club. That is far from ideal for Delap.
On the other hand, if Delap does end up joining Newcastle United, he would get a lot more playing time. The Magpies need to add more goals to their game, having struggled in front of goal following the exit of Alexander Isak. Nick Woltemade failed to meet expectations. And Yoane Wissa only scored three goals all season.
It will be very interesting to see what kind of transfer fee Chelsea want to part ways with Delap. They paid £30 million for him last summer and will want to recoup as much of that as possible, if not make a profit.
