Jordan Henderson’s transfer to Chelsea can be completed without a fee despite the midfielder having another year on his Brentford contract.
TalkSPORT understands this is possible because of a verbal agreement reached when he joined the club.
Henderson signed a two-year deal after moving to Brentford in July 2025. However, owner Matt Benham reportedly agreed that the former Liverpool captain could leave for free if a suitable opportunity emerged.

Why Jordan Henderson to Chelsea would be free
The agreement is informal and does not form part of Henderson’s written contract. Brentford are nevertheless expected to honour it after Chelsea expressed an interest in signing the 36-year-old.
Brentford would effectively agree to release Henderson or allow his contract to end without demanding a transfer fee. Chelsea would still need to agree personal terms with the midfielder and cover his wages and any signing-on payment.
TalkSPORT reports that Henderson has been given permission to pursue the move. He is understood to be keen on joining Chelsea, who currently lead the race for his signature.
ReadChelsea reported on Monday that the Blues were working on a deal for Henderson. Xabi Alonso wants to add experience and leadership to a squad largely built around younger players.
Henderson made 32 Premier League appearances for Brentford last season. His potential arrival comes as Chelsea also close in on Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, another experienced player identified during Alonso’s first transfer window.
The Jordan Henderson to Chelsea move has not been officially completed. Brentford’s willingness to honour the verbal agreement nevertheless removes the need for the clubs to negotiate a transfer fee.
