“We recognise we need balance,” said Chelsea co‑owner Behdad Eghbali when addressing criticism of the club’s recruitment policy in April.

Fast forward three months later and it appears Eghbali is a man of his word as the Blues are pushing to sign two players who are over the age of 30.

The Athletic" href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7473812/2026/07/28/chelsea-danny-welbeck-brighton-transfer/" target="_blank">The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Chelsea are close to landing Danny Welbeck, 35, from Brighton and Hove Albion and Jordan Henderson, 36, from Brentford.

Should both deals go through as expected, it will mark a significant shift in Chelsea’s strategy of primarily signing players aged 24 and under.

But as Eghbali stated, a change of approach is necessary if Chelsea are to avoid a repeat of the indiscipline which plagued them last season.

In a chaotic campaign which brought two managerial sackings and a 10th-place Premier League finish, Chelsea received a staggering 11 red cards in all competitions in 2025-26.

And that is why new manager Xabi Alonso is keen to inject more leadership into a youthful dressing room who need role models to further their development.

With over 1200 career appearances between them, Welbeck (525) and Henderson (694) can help raise the standards at Cobham Training Ground.

And regarding Welbeck, Chelsea are set to receive another benefit from the impending arrival of the former Manchester United and Arsenal striker.

Welbeck has been the scourge of Chelsea in recent years

Such was Welbeck’s impressive form for Brighton last season that many felt he was unlucky to miss out on a place in England’s World Cup squad.

The forward scored 13 Premier League goals for the Seagulls last season - a brilliant feat which proves he is getting better with age.

That sentiment is backed up by the fact that last season was the most prolific top-flight campaign in Welbeck’s storied career.

Chelsea fans will be quick to remember that three of those goals came against them last term - two at Stamford Bridge and one at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.

And when taking a closer look at Welbeck’s goal record, it turns out he has scored an incredible seven times in 19 league games against Chelsea.

Cutting his teeth on loan at Sunderland in 2010-11, Welbeck scored in a 3-0 league win at Chelsea in November 2010.

Also appearing for Sunderland that day was none other than his soon-to-be new Chelsea team-mate, Henderson.

After an 11-year gap owing to a series of injuries at United and Arsenal, Welbeck began to haunt Chelsea once again as a Brighton player.

After scoring in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in December 2021, he returned to that same venue to score the winner in a 2-1 victory in April 2023.

Welbeck then scored against Chelsea in a 2-1 home loss in May 2024 - the only time he has tasted defeat when netting against the six-time league champions.

While he was not on the scoresheet this time, Welbeck provided two assists as Brighton beat Chelsea 3-0 on home soil in February 2025.

And then Welbeck scored three goals against Chelsea last season - a brace at Stamford Bridge as Brighton ran out 3-1 winners, and a solitary strike in a 3-0 home success.

And so by signing Welbeck, Chelsea are not only capturing experience, but they are also removing a source of frustration over recent years.
