Bruno Guimaraes has been constantly linked with a move to Arsenal for weeks now. The Newcastle United captain is believed to have agreed on personal terms with the Premier League champions already. Mikel Arteta is also believed to be a big fan of the Brazilian midfielder and the driving factor behind the move.
Of course, Arsenal will need to find an agreement on a transfer fee with Newcastle United if they want to sign Guimaraes in this summer transfer window. And that won’t be an easy task.
Newcastle United have seen Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon leave already. Now, if they lose their captain as well, it is safe to say that the fanbase won’t be happy about it.
The Magpies should not have any pressing need to bring in a transfer fee either, having pocketed about £170 million for the exits of Tonali and Gordon. Yet, news broke yesterday that Arsenal were in advanced talks to sign Guimaraes, but was that on the mark or just another rumour?

The Newcastle sources in the media have always maintained that things are not as far along the line as some other outlets would have you believe. And they have stuck with that line of reporting, even after speculation about a deal being ‘advanced’.
According to Lee Ryder, Arsenal are interested. But no bid, and suggestions that there has been progress are described as “not true” right now. It looks like this is going to drag on for a bit.
On the other hand, another reliable reporter, Luke Edwards, stated that a senior source at Newcastle United said that “there is no situation with Bruno, there is nothing new, there are zero talks taking place at the moment…”
So, it looks like the media is divided on where things stand at the moment. Is a move close? Is it not? It all depends on who you listen to and who you choose to believe is reliable.
Guimaraes leaving would not be good news for Newcastle United
Guimaraes leaving would be a problem for Newcastle United. Firstly, they will be losing his immense quality. And over the past twelve months, that has happened more than enough already.
Alexander Isak, Gordon and Tonali have all left the club. Now, there is a genuine chance that Guimaraes could be set to follow. That means that within the space of a year, the Magpies have gone from being a winning team to one just looking to build a sustainable team.
The aim seems to have changed at St James’ Park. Just look at the club’s transfer activity and you will realise that. Four players have been signed so far this summer. Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur and Aladji Bamba.
All of them are talented players. But none of them has the experience and proven quality to replace those who have left or could leave. That is just the reality of the matter. It is easy to see why fans are starting to lose faith in the project already.
