Chelsea have agreed an undisclosed fee with Brighton & Hove Albion for 35-year-old Danny Welbeck and received permission to complete a medical in the next 24 hours ahead of an imminent switch to Stamford Bridge. The veteran has agreed a two-year deal that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2028.
Welbeck is expected to link up with the Chelsea squad when they return from their pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, ending in Hong Kong for a match against Italian giants Juventus. That encounter takes place at Kai Tak Stadium on Wednesday, August 5, with the referee’s whistle set to blow at 7.30 pm local time.
The signing of Welbeck is a clear ideological shift for the West London hierarchy. The club last paid a transfer fee for a player over the age of 26 four years ago when they bought Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona. He is the latest signing of the Xabi Alonso era, after the club-record £117 million for Morgan Rogers and £47 million for Italian full-back Marco Palestra.
Welbeck scored 13 Premier League goals for Brighton last season and knows Chelsea striker Joao Pedro from their time together at the Amex and Watford. He also scored a brace when the Seagulls won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge last season.
Alonso’s troops are in Sydney, where they kicked off their summer with a chaotic 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers. Soon, Jordan Henderson is also expected to join up with the squad and fly out to Hong Kong with Welbeck.
Why signing a 35-year-old forward has left the Chelsea fanbase uneasy
The first objection is not about pedigree or professionalism. If Welbeck were to arrive, Chelsea would have six senior centre forwards on their books, a glut they cannot sustain over a season when they have no European fixtures to negotiate. That department is already full with Joao Pedro, Emmanuel Emegha, Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, and Marc Guiu.
Secondly, those agitating for experienced reinforcements likely envisioned players at the dawn of their prime, not at the twilight of their careers. Welbeck is approaching his 36th birthday in December, and it has been two full years since Chelsea selected any player over the age of 30 in a competitive match. The club previously tried to sign Granit Xhaka without success, and had considered John Stones before the defender moved to Inter.
But the counterargument has a fair amount of institutional heft behind it. Co-owner Behdad Eghbali admitted last season, after a chastening tenth-placed finish and a trophyless year, that the recruitment doctrine needed a tweak. Welbeck brings hold-up skills, tactical intelligence, and dressing-room leadership, rather than a guaranteed starting spot.
So the departures should ease much of the congestion that is currently agitating the fanbase. It’s Guiu who could potentially leave this summer, along with Delap and Jackson.
