Middlesbrough in discussions to re-sign Premier League goalkeeper on loan

Middlesbrough are in talks with Premier League side Everton over a move for goalkeeper Mark Travers, according to Pete O’Rourke.

Middlesbrough have entered talks with Everton over a potential transfer for goalkeeper Mark Travers.

Boro are in the market for an additional shot-stopper ahead of the 2026/27 campaign with loan star Joe Wildsmith leaving the Riverside Stadium at the end of last season.

Several names have been linked with Middlesbrough but a reunion with Travers now appears to be a priority. Transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke took to social media platform X on Wednesday to confirm talks over a ‘potential loan deal’ for the player.

Middlesbrough eye Mark Travers reunion

Travers spent the second half of the 2024/25 season on loan at Middlesbrough and made 17 appearances under Michael Carrick.

The 27-year-old had been on the books at AFC Bournemouth at the time but completed a move to Everton last summer as a free agent. Travers has made just two senior appearances for the Toffees, struggling to oust Jordan Pickford from the starting berth.

His outings for the Merseyside outfit both came in the Carabao Cup, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Mansfield Town before being defeated by the same scoreline by Wolves.

Travers has featured in pre-season action for Everton but Jordan Pickford has been on World Cup duty with England. The goalkeeper played 60 minutes in the 1-0 defeat to Stoke City on Tuesday, making a trio of good saves.

However, Travers came under criticism for allowing teenager Gabriel Kelly to strike home from distance.

When leaving Boro in 2025, Travers had shared his love for the club in a farewell message. He wrote: “Not the way we wanted to finish the season but just wanted to thank all the fans for their amazing support throughout my time at the club!

“Also a big thanks to the players and staff for welcoming me to Middlesbrough and making it an enjoyable experience! UTB.”

Middlesbrough were known to been keen to sign the player permanently 12 months ago but did not have the means to do so, with Everton swooping in.

Boro linked with Man Utd goalkeeper

Middlesbrough head coach Kim Helberg has Sol Brynn as his first choice with Jon McLaughlin and Seny Dieng also available as options.

McLaughlin is expected to be offered a new deal at the Riverside Stadium, following the expiry of a one-year contract signed last year. Meanwhile, Dieng has been handed minutes in pre-season despite not playing for the club since December 2024, and nearly joining Feyenoord in January.

Manchester United man Radek Vitek is another who has emerged as a potential option for Middlesbrough. The 22-year-old impressed at Bristol City on loan last season but is now back at Old Trafford and set to struggle for minutes behind Senne Lammens.
