Arne Slot has been a man in demand since Liverpool opted to relieve him of his duties after a disappointing 2025/26 season.
It feels like a lifetime ago that Arne Slot was on the touchline at Anfield, but it’s actually been just two months since Liverpool pulled the trigger.
The Reds confirmed Slot’s exit on May 30, 2026, ending a two-season stint that began with a Premier League title but finished with a disappointing fifth-place finish.

Slot didn’t waste much time attracting interest either. Shortly after his Liverpool exit, Fulham came calling following Marco Silva’s move to Benfica, but Slot politely turned the vacancy down, seemingly happy to bide his time.
That patience appears to have been well-founded, because a far bigger job was brewing back home. Ronald Koeman stepped down as Netherlands boss on June 30, 2026, hours after Oranje’s penalty shootout exit to Morocco in the World Cup round of 32.
Technical director Nigel de Jong immediately kicked off the search for a successor, and Slot quickly emerged as the standout name, entering talks with the KNVB in the weeks that followed.
Now, though, those talks have hit a snag.
According to Dutch outlet NRC, Slot has been the clear frontrunner from day one, yet no agreement has been struck. Insiders say De Jong wants to tie Slot down until the 2030 World Cup, while Slot himself favours a shorter commitment running only until the 2028 European Championship.
Time is not exactly on their side either.
The Nations League group stage kicks off on September 24, and the Dutch will face a heavyweight opponent in Jürgen Klopp’s Germany – hardly the ideal fixture to walk into without a permanent man in the dugout.
Slot has been heavily touted amongst Dutch journalists and pundits.
It remains to be seen whether Slot and the KNVB can bridge the gap between their contract demands before that deadline arrives, but with the clock ticking toward September, both sides may need to compromise sooner rather than later.
