Jordan Henderson to Chelsea agreed until 2028
Romano has now given the transfer his “here we go” confirmation. The midfielder agreed personal terms after Chelsea made clear their desire to add him to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Henderson joined Brentford last summer on a two-year contract. However, he had an informal agreement with owner Matthew Benham allowing him to leave without a fee if a suitable opportunity became available.
Chelsea’s approach provided that opportunity, with Brentford prepared to honour the understanding reached when Henderson arrived.
The England international made 32 Premier League appearances last season. His experience and leadership appeal to Alonso as he attempts to bring greater balance to a young Chelsea squad.
Henderson captained Liverpool to Premier League and Champions League success before leaving Anfield in 2023. He later represented Al-Ettifaq and Ajax before returning to England with Brentford.
His arrival reflects a change in Chelsea’s recent recruitment approach. The Blues are also close to signing 35-year-old Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, with both players identified as experienced additions capable of influencing the dressing room.
Henderson will provide competition alongside Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez and Romeo Lavia. He can operate as a deeper midfielder or provide energy from a more advanced position.
Chelsea have not officially announced the transfer. However, Henderson has agreed his contract and is expected to complete the move this week.
