Chelsea have reportedly moved to the front of the queue for Jordan Henderson. The 36-year-old England midfielder is currently at Brentford but is being pursued by a host of clubs; the Blues are in front of two other clubs in the race, and the ex-Liverpool captain is open to the transfer.
Brentford will respect an informal agreement with Henderson which would allow him to leave for nothing. The veteran arrived from Ajax in July 2025 and has just one year remaining on his current terms in west London.
Henderson’s curriculum vitae is formidable, despite his advancing years. The 2019-20 Premier League and 2019 Champions League winner has made 694 senior appearances for Coventry City, Sunderland, Liverpool, Al-Ettifaq, Ajax and Brentford. He scored 41 times and laid on 87 assists, while winning seven major trophies during his time at Anfield. Thomas Tuchel also handed him a place in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
It is obvious that the overture of Chelsea is dictated by remedial rather than speculative considerations. Xabi Alonso has been keen to strengthen his midfield since the club’s earlier bid for Sunderland’s Granit Xhaka fell through this summer. There have been no formal club-to-club discussions between the two London sides, it is understood, but with the player wanting to move, an announcement is expected soon.
Chelsea’s Recalibration Towards Seasoned Experience
The Henderson gambit is just one strand in a much wider philosophical shift at Stamford Bridge. Xabi Alonso has made Brighton’s 35-year-old marksman Danny Welbeck a priority signing, with the Spaniard admiring both his technical accomplishment and his gravitas inside the dressing room.
This wholesale departure from precedent is truly striking for an ownership group previously wedded to adolescent potential. At the same time, Chelsea are set to sign 26-year-old Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix, and it’s been a full four years since the club recruited anyone older than the Frenchman. Alonso’s Leverkusen apprenticeship has plenty of precedent, sanctioning four signings over the age of 27 across consecutive campaigns, including Granit Xhaka and Alejandro Grimaldo.
Such a recalibration has inevitable knock-on effects for the young crop already in existence. Welbeck’s potential arrival could possibly come at the expense of 23-year-old Liam Delap, who was signed from Ipswich Town just last summer. And with September 1 fast approaching, Chelsea fans can expect more experienced reinforcements to arrive through the door before it shuts for business.
