Josh Acheampong is regarded as one of Chelsea’s brightest academy prospects, but his future is currently uncertain at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea view Josh Acheampong as a part of their long-term plans, having already tied him down to a contract through 2029 to keep him at Stamford Bridge.
The 19-year-old has earned some senior minutes during pre-season, including a start against Western Sydney Wanderers, where he featured at right-back.
However, his pathway to regular starts remains tough. At right-back, he sits behind established options in Reece James, Marco Palestra and Malo Gusto.
Meanwhile, central defence is equally crowded with Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, potentially Maxence Lacroix, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah and Mamadou Sarr.
Chelsea yet to make a decision on Josh Acheampong
Given that Acheampong is valued so highly by Chelsea, you would think that he’s set to stay at Stamford Bridge this summer.
However, according to Sami Mokbel of the BBC, Crystal Palace have an interest in a loan deal for Josh Acheampong, and there’s currently no indication on whether Chelsea are prepared to sanction an exit.
But the interesting part is that they’re considering Acheampong as a centre-back option, which is the position he would also be likely to play in should the Blues keep him.
Just months ago after Alonso joined Chelsea the stance was that Acheampong is not for sale at any cost, but now you wonder where he even fits into things.
Lacroix is on his way, Levi Colwill is a guaranteed starter and the Blues want to sign an experienced centre-back, so minutes are going to be limited anyway.
