Brentford have officially announced that Jordan Henderson has left the club after both parties agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
The former Liverpool captain joined Brentford on a free transfer from Ajax last summer, signing a two-year deal. However, his spell with the Bees has come to an end after just one season following interest from Chelsea.

Brentford confirmed the decision, allowing the 36-year-old to pursue a new opportunity. As a result, Chelsea will not have to pay a transfer fee to sign the experienced England international.
According to multiple reports, Henderson’s departure was made possible by a gentleman’s agreement reached when he joined Brentford in 2025.
The verbal arrangement with the club’s hierarchy allowed the midfielder to leave on a free transfer should the right opportunity arise, despite having another year remaining on his contract.
Chelsea are now expected to complete Henderson’s signing, with talks at an advanced stage. The midfielder is set to become another experienced addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad as the Blues continue reshaping their team ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
The move represents a notable shift in Chelsea’s recruitment strategy. After focusing heavily on young players in recent transfer windows, the club have turned their attention to experienced Premier League figures, with Henderson and Danny Welbeck both expected to arrive this summer.
Henderson joined Brentford after leaving Ajax as a free agent and brought leadership and top-flight experience to the Bees’ dressing room. During his season in west London, he became one of the senior figures in Keith Andrews’ squad following his decorated career with Liverpool and England.
Chelsea’s interest comes despite Henderson recently recovering from an arm injury suffered during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reports indicate he will undergo a medical before completing the move and is not expected to immediately join the club’s pre-season tour while final formalities are concluded.
