According to Ben Fernandes Santos, a regular contributor to Spanish outlet MARCA, who was speaking on Ramon Alvarez de Mon's YouTube channel, the Portugal international is among the defenders under consideration after an impressive FIFA World Cup campaign.
Veiga joined Chelsea from Basel for £12m in July 2024 before leaving Stamford Bridge last summer to join Villarreal.
Santos stressed that Veiga being on Real Madrid's shortlist does not necessarily mean a move is imminent, but claimed the 22-year-old has caught the club's attention of Jose Mourinho thanks to his performances and versatility.
Santos said: "Renato Veiga is one of the names Madrid has on the table, a centre-back they have been following and who, in my opinion, has had a good World Cup.
"He has played every possible minute for Portugal in the competition, he had a great match against Colombia.
"It seems that Madrid have seen him too, that they have taken note of him. It doesn't mean they're going to go after him, which people can get confused about. I don't know if there have been talks, I do know that he's on their list.
"It makes sense because of the World Cup he has had. A left-footed centre-back, in his time he was also a left-back. At Basel, he played as a holding midfielder. He really is quite a versatile guy."
However, Villarreal are unlikely to let the former Chelsea player leave cheaply after investing around €30 million to sign him last summer, while a move from Madrid may be dependent on the sale of Raul Asencio.

Juventus reach Kolo Muani agreement
Juventus have reportedly reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Randal Kolo Muani on an initial loan deal with a conditional obligation to buy, according to Sky Sport Italia reporter Gianluca Di Marzio.
The agreement would see the transfer become permanent if Juventus qualify for European competition, with the Serie A club set to pay €38 million (£32.5m) to secure Kolo Muani's services on a permanent basis.
The package could also rise by a further €12 million (£10.2m) through performance-related add-ons. The France international has also agreed to a five-year contract with Juventus, which would be activated should the move be made permanent.

Kolo Muani's arrival would strengthen Juventus' attacking options as they look to add more quality and depth in the final third.
However, according to Di Marzio, the Turin club are now unlikely to complete a deal for Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee after previously being linked with the Dutchman.
Sky Sport Italia are also reporting that Juventus have reached an agreement in principle with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of highly rated winger Kerim Alajbegovic.
The 18-year-old, who had attracted interest from several top European clubs including Chelsea, is set to join the Serie A giants in a deal worth around £25.7 million.
Alajbegovic, who turns 19 in September, enjoyed an impressive loan spell with RB Salzburg last season, registering 13 goals and four assists in 44 competitive appearances.
PSG turn to De Ketelaere
Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly identified Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere as a potential alternative attacking target as they continue to reshape their squad this summer.
According to RMC Sport and Belgian football expert Sacha Tavolieri, PSG have made contact with Atalanta to explore the availability of the Belgium international, with the Ligue 1 giants also monitoring Barcelona forward Ferran Torres as their preferred option.
Following a period of significant change at the Parc des Princes, PSG are looking to refresh their attacking options after several departures, including Kolo Muani's move to Juventus and Goncalo Ramos' switch to Milan.
While Torres remains high on their shortlist, De Ketelaere has emerged as an intriguing alternative. His stock has continued to rise after an impressive spell with Atalanta, where he has recorded 32 goals and 31 assists in 142 competitive appearances.
The Belgium international was also the only player to score against champions Spain during the 2026 World Cup, netting against goalkeeper Unai Simon in the quarter-final.
With his contract at Atalanta running until June 2028, PSG would likely need to negotiate a substantial fee if they decide to formalise their interest in the versatile attacker.
Goretzka 'offers himself to Barcelona'
Barcelona have been offered the chance to sign Leon Goretzka after the midfielder became a free agent following the expiry of his Bayern Munich contract, according transfer expert Matteo Moretto, as reported by Spanish publication SPORT.
The report claims Goretzka's representatives have contacted Barcelona over a potential move, with the Germany international interested in joining Hansi Flick's project after Frenkie de Jong's long-term knee injury.

Goretzka's previous relationship with Flick could make him an attractive option, having worked together at Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021, when the midfielder played a key role in the club's successful period.
However, MARCA journalist Moretto adds that Barcelona are not currently planning to strengthen in midfield, with Deco and the club's sporting department believing they have enough depth to cope with De Jong's absence.
The 30-year-old remained an important figure at Bayern last season, making 48 appearances across all competitions, but Barcelona's current stance suggests they are unlikely to pursue a deal despite his availability.
