Chelsea transfer news this week points to a move for Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, with the 36-year-old drawing interest from several Premier League clubs this summer.
Chelsea lead the race for Jordan Henderson
Chelsea are the clear front runners to sign Henderson, as reported by The Athletic, though other clubs are watching too. Brentford seem happy to let him leave on a free transfer, with no bad blood in the split. Henderson still has a year left on his Brentford deal, signed as a free agent from Ajax last summer.
The midfielder played for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the World Cup, but a bad fall cut his time short. He broke his arm falling over an advertising board while celebrating England’s win over Mexico. Speaking to ITV after the game, Henderson joked it was “not my finest hour.”He added that reaching the quarter finals was the main thing that mattered. He then had surgery and stayed with the squad as England reached the semi finals, where they lost to Argentina. Chelsea have since changed their transfer plans this summer, and now look for older, more experienced players.
The club let Andrey Santos leave for Manchester United in a deal worth up to £50m. Chelsea are now on a pre-season trip to Australia, where they will play Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur. New boss Xabi Alonso has already brought in Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Henderson’s stats in the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Appearances Tackles Interceptions Duels Won (%)
Premier League 32 27 17 48.5%
FA Cup 2 3 2 42.9%
Leadership and praise from former managers
Henderson’s skill as a leader has earned praise from several managers through his long career in football. As reported by The Athletic, Brentford boss Keith Andrews once called him“one of the most influential leaders in modern Premier League years.”Andrews also said Henderson helps raise standards across the whole squad, both in training and in matches. Thomas Tuchel, who picked Henderson for the World Cup squad this year, once described him as a“serial winner.” Tuchel added that Henderson brings leadership, character, and energy to every dressing room he joins.
Over twelve years at Liverpool, Henderson racked up 492 appearances across all competitions. He wore the captain’s armband for much of that time, lifting the Premier League and Champions League along the way. In 2023, he made a surprise move to Saudi Arabia, joining Al Ettifaq to reunite with Steven Gerrard. He later returned to the Premier League with Brentford.
A bold shift in Chelsea’s transfer plans
Jordan Henderson made 32 starts in the Premier League last season, which shows he can still perform at the top level. His real value, though, may lie off the pitch, where he can guide a young, growing midfield group. Names like Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, and Dario Essugo still need regular minutes to develop their own game. Chelsea have rarely bought players near Henderson’s age, with Rob Green and Thiago Silva among the few past cases.
Whether Henderson takes up a mostly bench role could shape how well this plan works out for both sides. If it goes through, this deal would give the Blues a rare blend of experience and leadership in the dressing room. It also raises fair doubts about playing time, since Chelsea have no European football this year to share out minutes.
