Leeds United should stay clear of £40m deal for Chelsea flop: View

Leeds United have proven they are not afraid to spend big on players this summer.

The £34million the Whites paid for Tarik Muharemovic is currently the second-highest fee we have ever paid for a player.

However, this could be set to slide down to number three soon on our most expensive signings list. The imminent arrival of James Trafford is reported to be for a club record £40million fee, with £5million in potential add-ons.

But despite spending so much on these two players, Leeds have also been linked with a big-money move for a Chelsea player this summer. But at the reported price, it is a deal the 49ers should stay clear of.

Liam Delap subject of Premier League interest

According to a report via The i Paper, Liam Delap, 23, has three suitors who are interested in him.

One of them is Leeds, with Delap struggling in his debut season at Chelsea.

The striker scored just one goal across his 28 Premier League appearances last season and failed to register an assist.

Chelsea are said to value the Englishman between £35-£40million. Leeds are reportedly monitoring the situation as they look to bring in more competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

At this stage, a deal for Delap would be considered ambitious, according to the report. Funds are said to be tight following the agreement of the Trafford deal.

The other two clubs interested in Delap are Nottingham Forest and Everton.

Whilst I wouldn’t be opposed to signing Delap, I would not do so for that reported fee. Paying potentially £40million for a player that low on confidence after a disastrous season could be a recipe for disaster.

Leeds should attempt to get Liam Delap on loan

If Leeds can, they should look to get Delap on loan if they are interested in him, with an option to buy if possible.

We know from his impressive season with Ipswich, in which he scored 12 Premier League goals, that he is certainly a promising young striker.

However, he was appalling last season, and potentially paying £40million for him would be far too much of a risk.

United certainly need to add another striker to their ranks this season, as having Joel Piroe as one of our forward options currently is just not good enough.

But if Chelsea are insisting on selling Delap for £35-40million this summer, Leeds should move on and look at other targets.
