Arsenal hold an interest in signing £69m Spanish star

Arsenal hold an interest in Sporting CP right-back Ivan Fresneda, according to The Times.

The Gunners have had a quiet summer transfer window thus far. They have made just one new outfield signing in winger Christos Tzolis.

There should be more transfer activity, and a couple of defensive reinforcements could be sought based on the current fitness concerns.

Centre-back William Saliba is already out for an ‘extended period‘ after suffering a back injury during France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain.

Meanwhile, regular right-back Jurrien Timber underwent minor surgery earlier this summer. He continues to recover from a persistent groin problem.

Arsenal could seek signings for both defensive roles, and The Times claim that Fresneda is a player on the Gunners’ radar for the right-back position.

Arsenal unlikely to pursue deal for Fresneda

The 21-year-old was regularly mentioned as an Arsenal target during his time at Real Valladolid, but he ended up joining Sporting CP in August 2023.

The Spaniard had a slow start to his career at the Lisbon giants, but he played a prominent role last term with almost 3,000 minutes in all competitions.

Fresneda managed only four goal contributions, but he impressed with other attributes such as his distribution, pace and quality overlapping runs.

Arsenal continue to be linked, but an offer is unlikely due to multiple reasons. First of all, he has just recovered from a muscle injury sustained in April.

The former Valladolid ace has played just 17 minutes in a friendly against Monaco since his setback.

Furthermore, Sporting CP are a difficult club to negotiate with. They are unlikely to entertain his departure at this stage unless his release clause is triggered.

The buy-out clause stands at a staggering £69 million. With Sporting’s tough negotiation skills, Arsenal are unlikely to attempt to pursue a deal for Fresneda.

They may seek a different alternative to the Spaniard. In Fresneda’s case, Arsenal may have to wait until next summer to secure a sizeable discount on the clause.

Sporting CP sold captain and midfielder Morten Hjulmand to Atletico Madrid earlier this month. The Dane left for a reduced transfer fee, having stayed last season.
