Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has given another update on Bruno Guimaraes' future amid ongoing Arsenal transfer interest
07:15, 30 Jul 2026
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has admitted that the Bruno Guimaraes transfer speculation is an unhealthy distraction as his side continute their preparations for the 2026/27 campaign. The Magpies were beaten 4-1 by Bristol City at Ashton Gate following on from a 1-1 draw with National League side Gateshead.
The poor result against the Championship side has sparked concern among the Magpies faithful about the upcoming campaign, having already lost Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle faithful know they can't afford to lose talisman Guimaraes, with Arsenal hopeful of getting a deal done this summer.
Speaking after the defeat to the Robins, Howe offered a fresh perspective on Bruno Guimaraes' future, suggesting that even the midfielder himself lacks complete control over what lies ahead.
The Newcastle boss remains optimistic that when the Brazil international reports back for duty - expected on Friday - he will demonstrate the same professionalism and 'commitment' that has defined his St James' Park career.
While Howe refrained from providing any guarantees regarding Bruno's continued presence at the club, it's understood that, as of 48 hours before his scheduled return, no formal approaches have been lodged for the player.

Addressing what could potentially become a destabilising factor following the 4-1 defeat at Bristol City, Howe told Chronicle Live: "Any distraction, if it's not healthy, is unhealthy.
"So, yeah (it would be negative for things to drag on), but we're not in control of that. And to some degree, I don't think Bruno's in control of that either."
Howe then introduced an intriguing dimension to proceedings, alluding to external 'forces' beyond his influence that could impact the midfielder's situation.
He explained: "What will be, will be. We can't control the forces that are at play here, we've just got to make sure that when Bruno comes back, we look after him and he trains well, which I'm sure he will do. And he makes a difference as he always has done."
When Chronicle Live pressed him on whether he'd sought any reassurances during their discussions in Bristol, Howe responded: "We've spoken numerous times. Assurances? I don't think you can push too hard for those.

"I've said many times we want players who are committed, and Bruno has always been committed. His training performances and his game performances have been outstanding, every time he's worn the shirt, he's played with the fans by his side. I'd love to see that continue."
Regarding whether Bruno would travel with the squad or join them in La Manga following his return from South America, Howe responded: "The details I don't actually know, but I don't see any reason why that wouldn't be the case [him being back on Friday]."
