Chelsea and Tottenham have both enjoyed tune-ups against A-League opposition and will now finish their respective tours of Australia with a clash against each other at Accor Stadium in Sydney on Saturday night.
This match will see the London rivals face off outside the UK for the first time ever.
Xabi Alonso’s Blues played out a 10-goal thriller against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday night as Joao Pedro came off the bench to score a quickfire hat-trick, averting a scare to complete a 6-4 win in the Spaniard’s first match in charge.
The Blues started a youthful XI in that match, before the likes of Pedro, Robert Sanchez, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Cole Palmer, Estevao and Jamie Gittens entered off the bench.
Alonso may be tempted to start the big names in this clash against a Premier League rival as he gets another look at the squad he continues to build, amid rumours that Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson will soon join to add some much needed experience.
They face a Tottenham side who drew 1-1 with Sydney FC, before ultimately running out winners in a 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
Roberto De Zerbi handed starts to Mathys Tel, who scored a superb free-kick, Conor Gallagher, Richarlison, Ben Davies and Lucas Bergvall, despite continued transfer interest in the 20-year-old Swedish midfielder.
There were also minutes off the bench for new signings Sandro Tonali and Andy Robertson, who impressed alongside a range of young prospects, including Luca Williams-Barnett, who dazzled with his speed and directness.
With a bumper crowd of over 80,000 expected at Accor Stadium, it will be fascinating to see how many of the Premier League sides’ biggest names take part from the start.
