Arsenal face a wait to discover the impact that Eddie Howe’s departure from Newcastle United will have on their quest to sign Bruno Guimaraes. The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the Brazil international this summer as they look to strengthen their midfield options.
Guimaraes is reported to be valued at more than £70million, and Newcastle have so far been reluctant to allow the 28-year-old to leave the club this summer.
Reports emerged on Thursday that Howe is expected to leave Newcastle this summer, despite taking charge of the club’s pre-season friendly defeat to Bristol City on Wednesday evening.
After the defeat at Ashton Gate, Howe was asked about Guimaraes’ future and whether or not the speculation had been a distraction to his preparations for the new campaign.
"Any distraction, if it’s not healthy, is unhealthy,” Howe told Chronicle Live.
"So, yeah (it would be negative for things to drag on), but we’re not in control of that. And to some degree, I don’t think Bruno’s in control of that either."
He added: "What will be, will be. We can’t control the forces that are at play here, we’ve just got to make sure that when Bruno comes back, we look after him and he trains well, which I’m sure he will do. And he makes a difference as he always has done."
When quizzed further if he had looked to seek assurances, Howe then said: "We’ve spoken numerous times. Assurances? I don’t think you can push too hard for those.

"I’ve said many times we want players who are committed, and Bruno has always been committed. His training performances and his game performances have been outstanding, every time he’s worn the shirt, he’s played with the fans by his side. I’d love to see that continue."
Howe was also asked about Guimaraes’ future on Tyneside after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Gateshead in a pre-season friendly last week.
"I have spoken to him normally as I would do,” Howe said. "Bruno is a fantastic person and we had some really good conversations before and during the World Cup and after the World Cup.

"What we speak about has to remain private. He is a great player and a great person."
Howe then added: "Look, I don't know what is going to happen with Bruno's future, that is for other people to speculate about. But also conversations that I'm not part of."
