Arsenal hope of signing Bruno Guimarães have received another significant boost following a fresh claim from Luke Edwards, widely regarded as one of the most reliable journalists covering Newcastle United.
Just hours after reporting that Eddie Howe is set to leave Newcastle, Edwards revealed another major detail behind the manager’s departure.

According to the Telegraph journalist, Howe believed Bruno Guimarães would be sold this summer, describing the situation as “the final straw.”
If accurate, it represents one of the strongest indications yet that Newcastle’s hierarchy were preparing for life without one of their biggest stars.

The timing of the revelation is particularly striking.
On Wednesday evening, before news of his exit emerged, Howe admitted he was no longer fully in control of events surrounding Guimarães’ future.
“We’re not in control of that. And to some degree, I don’t think Bruno’s in control of that either,” he told reporters following Newcastle’s defeat to Bristol City.
He later added: “What will be, will be. We can’t control the forces that are at play here.”
Less than 24 hours later, Howe’s departure was confirmed, and Edwards has now suggested the manager had already accepted that Guimarães would be leaving St James’ Park before the transfer window closes.

For Arsenal, it is another hugely encouraging development.
The Gunners have identified Guimarães as one of their priority midfield targets and are understood to have tabled an offer worth £70 million plus £5 million in add-ons, while negotiations between the clubs continue.
Howe had always been viewed as Guimarães’ biggest supporter inside Newcastle.
He built his midfield around the Brazilian, handed him the captaincy and repeatedly described him as indispensable to the club’s ambitions.
If the Newcastle manager himself believed a sale was inevitable, Arsenal may now feel their chances of completing one of the biggest deals of the summer have increased significantly.
Newcastle are still yet to publicly soften their stance, and no agreement has been reached between the clubs.
However, with Howe gone and one of the club’s most respected reporters claiming the manager expected Guimarães to leave anyway, Arsenal supporters have every reason to believe the transfer saga is moving firmly in their favour.
The coming days could now prove decisive as Arsenal look to turn growing optimism into one of the statement signings of the summer.
