Chelsea goalkeeper Max Merrick has completed a season-long loan move to National League side Hartlepool United. The 20-year-old will spend the 2026/27 campaign away from Stamford Bridge as he looks to gain valuable first-team experience.
The loan comes just months after Merrick signed a new Chelsea contract until 2028. The Blues see the England Under-20 international as a promising young goalkeeper. Regular senior football will help the England Under-20 international fulfil his potential. They believe it will give him valuable experience in a competitive environment as he continues his progress towards first-team football at Stamford Bridge.
Hartlepool move gives Merrick another chance to impress
Merrick has joined Hartlepool United for the rest of the season after spending the last few years developing through Chelsea’s academy. As reported by BBC Sport, the goalkeeper believes the move is the right step in his career.
“I’ve been at Chelsea since I was 12 and it’s been an incredible place to develop,” Merrick said.
“I’ve learned so much from the coaches and the players around me, but I feel like I’m ready for the next step now.
“Playing senior football regularly is where I want to be and as soon as I heard about the opportunity to come here, I knew it was one I wanted to take.”
Chelsea are also confident the loan will help Merrick continue his progress after rewarding him with a new long-term contract earlier this year.
Chelsea academy graduate earns another senior opportunity
Merrick joined Chelsea at Under-13 level and has worked his way through the club’s academy. As reported by Chelsea FC, he has become a regular in the Under-21 side. He also appeared in the Premier League 2, Premier League International Cup and EFL Vertu Trophy. Although he is still waiting to make his senior debut, Merrick has regularly trained with the first team. As reported by Chelsea FC, he has been included in the first team squad 11 times in recent years**.**
Last season, he was named on the bench for seven Champions League matches and also travelled with the squad for Chelsea’s Premier League 1-1 draw against Man City in January. His latest move will be his third loan outing away from Cobham.
Merrick made his senior football debut with Hanwell Town in the 2022/23 season. He then joined National League South club Hampton & Richmond on loan in January 2025. Performances during those spells impressed Chelsea enough to hand him a new deal until 2028.
Chelsea believe Merrick is now ready for another step up by playing regularly in the National League. He has good experience of being around the first-team environment but competitive senior games are seen as the best way for the goalkeeper to keep developing.
The season at Hartlepool will give him experience and also allow him to adapt to the physical demands and pressure of regular first-team football, something that cannot be fully replicated at academy level. For the young goalkeeper, it is an important stage in a journey that began at Chelsea’s academy eight years ago. After signing a new contract, Merrick now has the chance to prove himself in senior football. A successful spell at Hartlepool could strengthen his case for a future place in Chelsea’s first-team plans.
