Alan Shearer has explained why he expects Bruno Guimaraes to leave Newcastle United amid interest from Arsenal and what he thinks the midfielder may be thinking about his future. The update from the former striker comes in the aftermath of news that Eddie Howe is expected to leave his role as manager of the Magpies.
Howe is expected to leave Newcastle after five years at St James’ Park, which is likely to only increase the speculation that has surrounded Guimaraes’ future at the club.
Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Guimaraes, who is under contract at Newcastle until the summer of 2028, with suggestions that the Brazil international is valued at around £70million.
Howe’s departure follows the club selling Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon in permanent deals, receiving around £169million for the duo.
Shearer has expressed his surprise at Howe’s departure from Newcastle and believes it may point towards Guimaraes also leaving the club this summer.
The Newcastle legend also gave his verdict on the prospect of his former club appointing Matthias Jaissle as Howe’s replacement.
“It’s being reported that Matthias Jaissle is set to come in. I think we have to be careful if that is the case not to pile on,” Shearer said in an interview with Betfair.
“Clearly, he's got a great record in Saudi. Clearly, he's very young and inexperienced. The Premier League is a beast of a league. It's a big ask for anyone to come in and take over after what Eddie's done.
“I don’t think it’s a great look for what's happening at the minute with Newcastle, you know, it's like what's going on? We're selling all our best players.

“The fans are seeing Isak go, the fans are seeing Tonali go, the fans are seeing Gordon go. My guess is it’s probably only a matter of time before Bruno goes, because he'll look at what's happening with all those players and look at what's happening with Eddie and think, 'Well, from a personal point of view, from his point of view, I guess I'm going to be next.'

“It's certainly not a good look, and they’ll have to navigate some tough waves coming their way now, because it's the unknown.
“I mean, if Jaissle does come in, you're asking a thirty-eight-year-old to come in and navigate very, very tricky waters.”
