Reece Welch has agreed terms to join Bradford City on a free transfer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke, following a trial spell with the League One club.
The 22-year-old was released by Everton at the end of last season after his contract expired, bringing an end to a spell at the club that began when he joined the academy at the age of seven.
He made his senior debut in an FA Cup tie against Boreham Wood in March 2022, but went on to make just three appearances for the first team.
Welch spent time on loan at Forest Green Rovers and Belgian side Deinze during his time at Everton, without either move leading to a breakthrough on his return. He had also been linked with Sheffield Wednesday and Danish club Horsens earlier in the summer, along with interest from Freiburg reported back in May.
A centre-back by trade, Welch captained Everton at youth level and won caps for England at various age groups up to Under-20. He is understood to have impressed Bradford during a trial period before terms were agreed.
The move brings Welch back into English football’s fourth tier for the first time since his loan at Forest Green, with regular first-team football now the priority after a difficult period trying to establish himself on Merseyside.
