Calvin Ramsay was only considered a last-resort option under Arne Slot, even during last season’s right-back crisis, but the Scot still took pride in his role.
Ramsay made the matchday squad on 20 occasions last season as injuries ravaged Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong and Joe Gomez.
But despite being regularly involved around the first team, the 22-year-old only made two appearances – one start in a heavily changed Carabao Cup side and another off the bench to replace Curtis Jones for a minute in the FA Cup.
His treatment led to criticism of Slot, who told reporters in January that he simply had “better options to play” despite a clear shortage.
The arrival of Andoni Iraola could provide a new opportunity to Ramsay, but speaking to The Redmen TV after the 1-0 win over Wrexham, he took a mature view of his role last season.
“Not really, because I was still part of Liverpool Football Club,” he said when asked if he lost motivation at any point.
“It’s the biggest football club in the world.
“So I think to be involved and even if it was playing games with the U21s, getting minutes and fitness, and obviously I was training with the first team as well at times [was enough].
“I played a couple of games, potentially could have played in a few more, but still, to be part of the team was still good.”
Has Andoni Iraola spoken to Calvin Ramsay about his future?

Ramsay has so far featured in both friendlies under Iraola, who remains without Bradley due to a long-term knee injury, and has split the minutes almost evenly with Frimpong.
While Liverpool are expected to enter the market for a new right-sided defender this summer, there remains a possibility that the new head coach sees a future for his No. 47.
Asked whether he heard from Iraola about his role for the season yet, Ramsay replied: “Nothing yet.
“But it’s been good [in pre-season], it’s been intense, really intense.

“We’ve all enjoyed it, just working hard and trying to get as fit as we possibly can for the start of the season. It’s been good.”
Speaking more on his future, the Scotland international added: “I feel fit. I don’t know what the plan will be yet, but just whatever happens, happens.
“I just need to make sure I work as hard as I possibly can. I feel fit, still got a little way to go, but overall I feel good.”
