Andoni Iraola has revealed Joe Gomez is to miss the start of the Premier League season and will be out for “some weeks” through injury.
Just seven minutes into his pre-season campaign, Gomez was forced off against Sunderland with a muscular problem.
He subsequently missed Liverpool’s friendly against Wrexham and Iraola has now revealed he will not be available for the start of the Premier League season.
“Joe has an injury, it was quite clear. He is some weeks off,” Iraola said with the Reds’ trip to Newcastle just over three weeks away.
“It’s a muscle injury. I always say one month, maybe less, but it’s impossible to have him for the start of the Premier League season – but not so long after that.”
Liverpool’s dearth of senior centre-backs

Iraola has previously said his options in defence were “very thin” and Gomez’s injury adds to those problems.
With Gomez out and Giovanni Leoni still recovering from last September’s ACL surgery, Liverpool have been left with very few senior defenders.
Virgil van Dijk is training on Merseyside, awaiting the squad’s return, and Ibrahima Konate is, of course, now a Real Madrid player.
Thankfully, new signing Jeremy Jacquet should see his first minutes of action in the Reds’ final US friendly, against Leeds on Sunday.
