Arsenal have opened direct talks with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes. The Gunners want to sign the midfielder this summer. They are pushing to strengthen their midfield, with the Brazilian now making the Emirates his preferred destination.

Guimaraes wants his future sorted before he returns for pre-season with Newcastle. Arsenal believe they can reach an agreement, but the two clubs are still far apart on the fee.

Arsenal step up pursuit of Guimaraes

The Gunners have taken the next step by opening direct talks with Newcastle. As reported by The Sun, previous negotiations had been handled through intermediaries, but Arsenal have now opened club-to-club talks in an effort to complete the deal.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue. The report says both sides agreed personal terms in principle weeks ago. Guimaraes wants Arsenal despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.

The 28-year-old is keen to have his future resolved before Newcastle’s football pre-season training camp in Spain. Reports claim that the midfielder has told his representatives he wants clarity before reporting back to Eddie Howe’s squad. However, Arsenal and Newcastle still disagree on the transfer fee.

Newcastle standing firm over asking price

Newcastle are standing firm in the talks. As reported by The Sun, Arsenal were initially willing to pay around £60 million, but Newcastle quickly made it clear they wanted significantly more.

As reported by TEAMtalk, the Magpies value Guimaraes close to the £100 million they received from Tottenham Hotspur for Sandro Tonali earlier this summer. Newcastle see Guimaraes as one of their key players. They will only sell if their asking price is met. Newcastle say they still have not received an official offer from Arsenal.

Newcastle also expect Guimaraes to return for pre-season as planned. Manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that the midfielder will report back on July 31, and Newcastle expect him to travel to Spain with the squad. Guimaraes, however, wants the situation resolved before then so he does not return with his future still uncertain.

Arsenal looking to strengthen after missing key targets

Signing Guimaraes has become one of Arsenal’s main priorities but they missed out on several other transfer targets. The Gunners failed to sign Morgan Rogers after Chelsea matched Aston Villa’s £117 million asking price. Arsenal chose not to match the fee.

Arsenal also looked at Mateus Fernandes, but Tottenham completed the deal after his reported £85 million price proved too high. They also showed interest in Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, but the Cherries want to keep him despite his decision to reject a new contract

Arsenal have, however, made progress elsewhere. The Premier League champions agreed a £34 million deal for Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis. They also signed goalkeeper Illan Meslier from Leeds United for free.

With Guimaraes making Arsenal his preferred destination and personal terms already understood to be in place, attention now turns to the negotiations between the two clubs. The next few days could be key as Arsenal try to lower Newcastle’s asking price and complete one of the biggest Premier League deals of the summer.
