Former Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has reportedly emerged as a candidate for the Al-Ahli job. The Dutchman has been out of work since being sacked by Liverpool in May after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.
He was also linked with the Fulham job following Marco Silva’s departure but turned down the opportunity before former Liverpool right-back Alvaro Arbeloa was appointed.

Slot has also been linked with replacing Ronald Koeman as Netherlands head coach. Slot emerged as the leading candidate to replace Ronald Koeman following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
However, negotiations with the KNVB have reportedly stalled, with the former Liverpool boss preferring a contract that runs until the end of Euro 2028 rather than a longer deal through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Arne Slot has since confirmed he will not be taking charge of the Dutch national team. The 47-year-old said, as quoted by Telegraaf, “I want to remain active in club football in Europe. And that wasn’t decided today.”
Slot was replaced by Andoni Iraola at Liverpool after the Spaniard impressed during his three-year spell at Bournemouth.
Appointed in the summer of 2024 following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, Arne Slot enjoyed a dream debut season at Anfield.
The former Feyenoord boss guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2024/25, securing the club’s 20th league championship with four games to spare after a memorable 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
Liverpool also reached the League Cup final, where they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United. Slot’s achievements earned him both the LMA Manager of the Year and Premier League Manager of the Season awards.
However, his second campaign proved far more difficult. Despite opening the 2025/26 season with five consecutive league wins, Liverpool’s form declined, and they finished fifth in the Premier League, although they still secured qualification for the Champions League.
Liverpool announced Slot’s departure at the end of May 2026, despite the Dutchman still having one year remaining on his contract.
