The report states that an agreement in principle has now been reached between Arsenal and Newcastle United for a package worth £77 million plus add-ons.

While the transfer has not yet been formally completed, only the finer details remain before the move can be finalised.

Khan adds that the next 48 hours will be crucial, with both clubs working to resolve the outstanding issues needed to complete one of the biggest transfers of the summer.

The latest update is another significant boost for Arsenal supporters after a remarkable 48 hours of developments.

Earlier this week, multiple reports suggested negotiations between the clubs were progressing positively, while BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel revealed there was an expectation from several sources that an agreement was achievable.

The situation then intensified following Eddie Howe’s departure from Newcastle, before further reports claimed the Magpies were becoming increasingly open to allowing their captain to leave.

Now, Arsenal appear to be preparing for the practical stages of the transfer.

Although reserving a medical date does not guarantee a deal will be completed, clubs rarely begin organising medical schedules unless they are confident negotiations are approaching the finish line.

Guimarães has been Andrea Berta’s priority midfield target throughout the window, with Arsenal believing the Brazilian’s experience, leadership and Premier League pedigree make him the ideal addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

The 28-year-old would provide elite competition alongside Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi while adding further quality to a side looking to defend the Premier League title and challenge for the Champions League.

For now, contracts still need to be signed and the remaining details must be resolved.

However, with an agreement in principle reportedly in place, a medical provisionally scheduled and the next two days described as decisive, Arsenal are now closer than ever to completing the blockbuster signing of Bruno Guimarães.
