Newcastle United fans have spent the summer bracing for turbulence after a wave of high-profile exits, but few expected the next departure to be the man in the dugout himself.
With Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and now doubts swirling over Bruno Guimaraes’ future already dominating headlines on Tyneside, the club’s off-season has taken its most dramatic turn yet.

Eddie Howe has officially left his role as Newcastle United head coach, ending a near-five-year spell that transformed the club’s fortunes.
The 48-year-old informed the club he wanted to step away from football, with the two parties agreeing to part ways just weeks before the new Premier League season gets underway.
The timing could hardly be more dramatic. Newcastle open their 2026/27 campaign against Liverpool on August 23, meaning Howe’s exit leaves the Magpies searching for a new head coach with barely three weeks to prepare for a daunting trip against the reigning contenders.
His final match in charge was a chastening 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in a pre-season friendly.
Speaking on the exit, Howe said:
“After a period of personal reflection, I have decided that now is the right time for me to step away from my role as head coach of Newcastle United.
“After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.
“Although it’s been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it’s the right one. I have always put the best interests of Newcastle before my own in every single decision I have made whilst I’ve been here and this one is no different.
“It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United.
Howe’s decision follows growing unease over the club’s transfer business, with the sales of Tonali and Gordon compounding uncertainty around Guimaraes’ own future at St James’ Park. Reports indicate Howe had been quietly weighing his position for weeks before discussions with the club’s hierarchy over the last 48 hours accelerated his exit.
Howe leaves as one of Newcastle’s most successful modern-era managers, having ended their 70-year wait for silverware with the 2025 Carabao Cup triumph and guiding the club into the Champions League on two occasions.
