Liverpool officially cancel pre-season friendly with cryptic reason provided

Liverpool’s preparations for the new season under Andoni Iraola are gathering pace in the United States.

The USA tour leg is drawing to a close. The Spaniard oversaw his debut game on the touchline with a 4-2 over Sunderland last Sunday.

The Reds followed up their opening win of the tour by edging out Wrexham 1-0 at Yankee Stadium, with Rio Ngumoha’s deflected second-half strike securing the win.

Attention now turns to Chicago, where Liverpool will face Leeds United on Sunday 2 August, offering Iraola a chance to reintegrate more senior players as they build towards the Premier League kick-off.

The US tour will be followed by a return to Anfield, with Monaco visiting on Sunday 9 August for a 2:30pm BST kick-off before Serie A outfit Como 1907 arrive on Sunday 16 August at 6pm BST, rounding off a busy warm-up programme in front of the home fans.

While the first team work under the spotlight in America, Liverpool’s U21s have been away on their own pre-season tour in Slovenia.

However, their schedule has taken an unexpected twist, with the club confirming that an upcoming friendly at Bromley has been cancelled after Liverpool were “unable to fulfil the fixture”, without offering any further explanation beyond a brief statement.

The club released a statement on the cancellation of the August 5th fixture with the cryptic reasoning:

“Liverpool U21s’ pre-season friendly away at Bromley has been cancelled due to Liverpool FC being unable to fulfil the fixture.”

“Rob Page’s squad were scheduled to visit Copperjax Community Stadium on the evening of Wednesday August 5, but the game has now been called off.”

“Both clubs are strongly committed to a positive and long-term relationship and discussions will take place around a fixture taking place during the 2027-28 pre-season campaign.”

“Further information around match tickets and hospitality tickets purchased will be circulated in due course, once there is a commercial agreement in place between the two clubs.”

The Reds stressed that both clubs remain committed to a positive relationship and indicated that discussions will take place over arranging a replacement game during the 2027-28 pre-season.
