Arsenal consider move for £51.5m Uruguay international
Arsenal have been offered the opportunity to sign Sporting CP wing-back Maxi Araújo, according to reports.
The transfer would cost at least £51.5million, with Liverpool also considering a move for the Uruguay international.
Intermediaries have contacted potential suitors after Sporting indicated that Araújo could leave for the right price.
SunSport reports that Arsenal and Liverpool are assessing whether the 26-year-old represents value at Sporting’s current asking price. Araújo is reportedly eager to move to the Premier League, which could make personal terms easier to negotiate.
Sporting have also started identifying possible replacements, although neither interested club has submitted a formal offer.

Araújo primarily operated at left-back for Sporting last season, recording five goals and four assists in the Portuguese league.
He can also play as a wing-back or winger and scored twice for Uruguay during the World Cup while operating further forward. Araújo has produced 11 goals in 93 Sporting appearances since arriving from Toluca in 2024.
His versatility could interest Mikel Arteta, particularly if Myles Lewis-Skelly eventually moves into midfield. However, Arsenal already have several established options on the left side of defence.
Riccardo Calafiori and Lewis-Skelly can play at left-back, while Piero Hincapié has completed a permanent move following his successful loan spell. ReadArsenal recently highlighted Hincapié’s ability to cover both left-back and centre-back.
Arsenal are also prioritising a winger and central midfielder before the transfer window closes. Spending £51.5m on another left-sided defender would therefore appear unlikely unless Arteta views Araújo primarily as an attacking option.
The Gunners are considering the opportunity, but Sporting may need to lower their valuation before the Maxi Araújo Arsenal transfer becomes realistic.
