There's a tattoo running down Phil Foden's neck that reads: sky is the limit. After a difficult few months that led to him being left out of the England squad for the World Cup, the Manchester City star has become more interested in the floor.

A career that had reached stratospheric heights when he was named the best player in the Premier League aged 24 after helping Pep Guardiola's side to an historic fourth consecutive title was supposed to fly even higher at Euro 2024. Then he was less effective than everyone wanted playing out of position under Gareth Southgate, suffered from physical and mental burnout, and badly struggled the following season.

Last year was expected to see Foden's glorious return, and it certainly looked that way for a few months as the homegrown talent played some brilliant football and scored decisive goals for City towards the end of 2025. His form disappeared again in the new year though and while most of his teammates went off to the World Cup he was left at home as Thomas Tuchel followed Guardiola's lead in not feeling able to select him.
