The transfer battle for Gerard Martin has taken an interesting turn. The Blues have joined AC Milan in pursuing the Barcelona player.
Chelsea to clash with AC Milan for Martin’s transfer?
Chelsea are ready to compete with AC Milan in order to secure Martin’s transfer for the next season, as reported by CaughtOffSide. Apart from the West London club, Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa have shown their interest in the 24-year-old defender. Barcelona don’t look too interested in a deal, but things might change in the coming months.
Martin plays for Barcelona right now. The Spanish club signed him from UE Cornella for a modest amount of €200,000 in July 2023. However, he made his full-fledged debut only in 2024, when he was promoted to the club’s main team. Last year, he renewed his contract. He can now play for Barca until June 2028.

Will Martin be a good fit at Chelsea?
Martin is famous for his defensive skills. He is brilliant in terms of marking and the aerial game. He played a crucial role in Barcelona’s La Liga victory last year. That’s why Chelsea have renewed their interest in the Spanish defender. They cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes as they did last year, especially in the Premier League. The Blues finished in 10th place in the League table. That is the reason Xabi Alonso was brought as the new manager for the upcoming season. Alonso is hopeful of bringing back the Blues to winning ways by next season.

Martin worked wonders for Barca last year. However he has not been given his dues. Despite a brilliant run, Martin was excluded from the Spanish squad for the 2026 World Cup. Luckily, it didn’t matter much as Spain ended the 16-year World cup drought. They defeated defending champions from Argentina 1-0 in the final. Spain had last won the World Cup in the 2010 edition.
It won’t be an easy battle for Chelsea. However, if they are serious about Martin, the Blues are in a much better position to secure the defender for the next season. If they come up with a suitable offer, Barcelona might be tempted to release Martin as well.
