Curtis Jones is involved in a big Italian media splash almost every day. The hype around his potential move from Liverpool to Inter Milan won’t go away, and perhaps expectations are too high.
Scott McTominay’s impact in Serie A, after he arrived for €30m from Manchester United, has encouraged such transfers.
Inter originally wanted Jones in the January window. They were unable to go through with that deal and, subsequently, Davide Frattesi stayed. The Italian was on his way to Nottingham Forest if Inter had got Jones.
Interest in the 25-year-old has remained. Given the Liverpool player’s contract expires in 2027, there’s pressure on the Reds.
What Corriere dello Sport are saying
Jones is involved in three big Italian newspaper splashes on Saturday.
First up is Corriere dello Sport.
Inter Milan manager Cristian Chivu is pushing the transfer for Curtis Jones. Chivu is convinced the midfielder will raise the quality of his squad.
However, Liverpool are ‘pushing high and holding out, but risk losing him for free’.
John Stones arrived at Inter Milan as a free agent this week. Jones liked a post announcing the transfer, and this is taken as flirting. Inter and the Reds man ‘exchanged promises’ in January, and the situation remains the same.
Unfortunately for the Italians, Liverpool also haven’t budged and still want €40m.
Gazzetta dello Sport’s take
Curtis Jones is the priority midfield signing for Inter Milan, reports the famous old pink daily.
Gazzetta are often prone to a bit of transfer poetry, and their intro goes like this: ‘The transfer market is a rollercoaster, both emotional and commercial. It produces moments where you feel like you’re gazing out at the view from a rooftop, perhaps the one where Inter invited local partners and investors for a cocktail yesterday, and others where you have to dribble through puddles in Hong Kong’s wet summer. It’s difficult to keep your balance, but ambition creates expectations.’
Inter Milan are in Hong Kong for part of their pre-season and Cristian Chivu has again asked the club for Jones. Liverpool just aren’t budging from that €40m.
Earlier this summer that was thought to be a negotiating point, however, that hope is shaking. That’s because of how crazy the Premier League market has been so far.
Inter Milan will make a further push but first need to sell Davide Frattesi, who has asked to leave.
Over to Corriere della Sera…
The final newspaper of our round-up disagrees with the other two on price. In this report, Liverpool are asking for €35m and have been for a while.
That Instagram like regarding John Stones’ transfer is again presented as flirting. Corriere della Sera explain it’s caused a fuss among fans. There’s more confidence from this newspaper than the other two, with a belief developments could come quickly.
