Bruno Guimaraes has hailed Eddie Howe as “one of the best managers” after his emotional Newcastle United exit.
A club statement yesterday confirmed the news that had broken a day earlier - Howe is no longer the Toon manager. Newcastle are close to agreeing a deal to appoint Al-Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle as his replacement.
Howe led the Magpies on a magical journey from relegation certainties to Champions League regulars. He also broke the most famous trophy drought in English football by beating Liverpool at Wembley last year.

In an emotional message, Guimaraes - currently angling for a move to Arsenal - thanked Howe for bringing him to Newcastle. He wrote: "Ed, how could I ever put into words how grateful I am to you? First of all, I want to thank you for bringing me to this club.
“Thank you for everything you've done for me, for helping me grow not only as a player, but more importantly, as a person. You gave me the honour of being captain - of being your captain. That is something I will never forget and will carry with me for the rest of my life.
"Sharing the day-to-day with you and having you as my manager has been a privilege. I'm truly grateful for every opportunity, for the trust you placed in me, and for every moment we shared together.
“Without a doubt, you are one of the best managers I've ever had. Please know that my gratitude will always remain, and that you will always have a friend in me. Thank you for everything. I wish you and your family nothing but happiness, success, and all the very best. With affection, Bruno."

Guimaraes did not board Newcastle’s flight for their La Manga training camp. The Magpies are set to face Valencia next weekend and jetted out from Tyneside yesterday.
However, the Brazilian asked to stay behind as he believes a deal with Arsenal is close. New boss Jaissle is expected to link up with the first-team squad for the first time later today.
Newcastle sources are yet to indicate that Arsenal have tabled a bid. However, as The Gazette has reported consistently, it is likely that Guimaraes will not kick a ball for the Magpies again.
Movement could happen over the weekend as Newcastle aim to move on with their new manager. The onus remains in Arsenal’s court to match Guimaraes’ price tag.
