‘Fire in my belly’ – Chelsea officially announce Welbeck signing
Chelsea have officially announced the signing of Danny Welbeck from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The transfer is complete, with the experienced striker signing a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2028.
The 35-year-old will now join Xabi Alonso’s squad during Chelsea’s pre-season tour after completing his move from Brighton.
Welbeck arrives with 400 Premier League appearances behind him and considerable experience at the highest level. He has also won major honours with Manchester United and Arsenal during a career spanning almost two decades.
Speaking after completing the move, Welbeck said joining Chelsea filled him with “immense pride” and revealed that conversations with Alonso helped convince him to make the switch.
Welbeck gives Alonso another option alongside João Pedro, who established himself as Chelsea’s first-choice striker last season.
ReadChelsea reported earlier on Saturday that João Pedro is set to receive a new contract after scoring 23 goals during his first year with the club. That article also outlined Chelsea’s pursuit of Welbeck as Alonso looked to add more experience to his attacking options.
Welbeck remained productive during his final seasons at Brighton. He scored 26 Premier League goals across the past two campaigns and made more than 200 appearances for the Seagulls.
The former England international also brings Champions League experience and has played at two World Cups.
Welbeck told Chelsea’s official website that he still has “that fire in my belly” and wants to help the club continue competing for trophies.
