Röhl strike and Torunarigha own goal seal Everton win in Hamburg
Everton beat Hamburger SV 2-1 at the Volksparkstadion, bouncing back from a 1-0 defeat to Stoke in midweek. It was Everton’s fourth pre-season fixture, and their second win of the summer.
Merlin Röhl gave Moyes’ side the lead five minutes into first-half stoppage time. Thierno Barry did the work, holding off a defender before flicking the ball back into Röhl’s path after a spell of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall build-up play.
It was a goal Everton had not looked like scoring for most of the half — Tyrique George had forced two corners and put one shot on target, deflected behind, while Jarrad Branthwaite came back into the side after missing the Stoke game.
Hamburg were level early in the second half. Jake O’Brien’s poor goal kick fell straight to Patson Daka, who spun away from Travers and slotted home — Daka’s second sight of goal in as many minutes, after an earlier effort from the same position had gone just wide.
Jordan Torunarigha put through his own net in the 88th minute to hand Everton the win, in front of a crowd approaching 30,000 at a stadium that had sold tickets for a Hamburg-Everton double-header, including the women’s fixture earlier in the day, which Everton Women won 1-0.
Moyes made wholesale changes throughout, with Tom King, Tyler Dibling, Carlos Alcaraz and Beto among those introduced from the bench. Tim Iroegbunam was booked for a challenge on the stroke of half-time.
Everton now turn to their remaining two pre-season fixtures before the Premier League season opens on August 22nd.
