Moyes finally gets his Gueye replacement — and it’s coming from North London

Everton have agreed a deal in principle with Arsenal for Christian Nørgaard, David Ornstein reported on Saturday, with the news breaking during Everton’s friendly against Hamburg.

The fee is around £7m. Nørgaard is 32, a Denmark international, and joined Arsenal from Brentford a year ago for roughly £10m. He made one Premier League start, on the final day of the season, once the title was already won.

Twenty appearances in all competitions, most of them from the bench.

Arsenal look to be selling the player to fund other business. They’re closing in on Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes, and Nørgaard was never going to start ahead of him.

Everton are without a recognised defensive midfielder given that Idrissa Gana Gueye left as a free agent this summer. Nørgaard captained Brentford for six years and made nearly 200 appearances before his move to Arsenal, and arrives with a Premier League winner’s medal from a season that he barely featured in.

A medical is expected next week once the paperwork is done. He’d be Everton’s fourth signing of the summer, following Merlin Röhl, Hayden Hackney and Tyrique George.
