Chelsea have reportedly upped their offer for Pep ChavarrĂa, and talks between the west London club and Rayo Vallecano are now moving in a more positive direction. The 28-year-old Catalan full-back has been earmarked by Xabi Alonso, whose intentions have shaped the club’s recruitment blueprint since his arrival.
The rationale behind the move for Chavarria is hardly inscrutable to anyone watching at Stamford Bridge. Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid earlier in the summer. He happened to be Chelsea’s most accomplished player in their rearguard, and since then, Alonso has been seeking a bona fide specialist in that berth.
But the money conversation has been long, and sometimes fractious. BlueCo’s reported initial offer of around €9m was instantly rejected, before a second bid of up to €15m in fixed fee and bonuses was made. Rayo have refused to yield in their demand for a guaranteed fee closer to €25m, with president RaĂşl MartĂn Presa personally overseeing negotiations.
ChavarrĂa agreed to personal terms with Chelsea a few weeks ago, reportedly even lowering his salary demands to help the clubs reach a compromise. In 2022, he joined from Real Zaragoza, and last season he played 33 La Liga games, clocking up 2,681 minutes and chipping in with one goal and two assists, and featured eight times in the Conference League. His Vallecas contract, renewed in June 2025, runs until June 2030, which explains Rayo’s hard stance.
Xabi Alonso insists Chelsea must “be ready”
Chelsea were in Sydney for their pre-season commitments when Alonso faced the question of transfers head-on. When asked if his priority was to trim a bloated squad or to bring in more recruits, the Basque coach did not rule out either option.
Alonso has always emphasised the need to balance quality with mentality, and not merely amass flashy talent. He said:
“No, I think that we have to be ready. The market is open for a few weeks. We need to be aware of different positions, different situations. So for sure, we have a plan, we have an idea, and we need to assess in the right moment what we’re doing. We can’t say what’s gonna happen but some things might happen.”
Those measured words now take on new relevance as the ChavarrĂa talks have gained real momentum. Chelsea’s Premier League season starts on 24 August, so Alonso has a limited time to integrate his much-wanted full-back.
