Chelsea forward ready to fight for place despite exit interest
Liam Delap intends to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge despite increased competition in Xabi Alonso’s attack.
The forward’s remains uncertain after Danny Welbeck’s arrival, but the 23-year-old is not currently pushing to leave the club.
Football Insider reports that Delap wants to prove himself to Alonso after a difficult first campaign with Chelsea. The striker believes a full pre-season under the new head coach can give him an opportunity to earn a more significant role.
That task has become harder following Chelsea’s latest piece of transfer business. ReadChelsea reported on Saturday that Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Danny Welbeck, with the former Brighton striker signing until 2028.

Delap arrived from Ipswich Town for £30million last summer after scoring 12 Premier League goals during the 2024/25 campaign. However, his first season at Stamford Bridge produced only three goals across all competitions as injuries and competition disrupted his progress.
Football Insider reports that Delap remains keen to stay and convince Alonso that he deserves another opportunity. Everton have maintained an interest, while Leeds United and Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the striker.
Aston Villa were previously offered the opportunity to sign Delap. However, Football Insider reported that Unai Emery’s side were not interested at that point and preferred a different attacking profile.
Delap’s biggest issue is now the competition already inside Alonso’s squad.
João Pedro established himself as Chelsea’s first-choice striker during his debut campaign and is now set to receive improved terms. ReadChelsea covered how João Pedro is set for a new Chelsea contract following a 23-goal first year at Stamford Bridge.
Welbeck adds another proven option, while Emmanuel Emegha will also return from injury. Alonso therefore has several different profiles available through the middle.
There is still logic behind Delap wanting to stay.
He has only spent one season at Chelsea and worked under considerable managerial instability during that campaign. Leaving before completing a full pre-season with Alonso would prevent him from discovering whether he can fit the new manager’s system.
Delap has already shown glimpses this summer, including scoring during Alonso’s first behind-closed-doors friendly against Crawley Town. His physicality also provides something different from João Pedro.
However, Chelsea have previously shown a willingness to listen to offers. The Athletic reported before Welbeck’s arrival that Delap was one of the forwards the club would consider selling if the right proposal arrived.
The Liam Delap Chelsea future could therefore depend on the next few weeks. Delap wants to stay and fight, but he must quickly convince Alonso that there is room for him in an increasingly crowded attack.
