Alonso is not happy–Chelsea suffer huge injury setback

Chelsea Injury News: Chelsea‘s pre-season plans have suffered an unexpected interruption after Robert Sanchez picked up a minor injury, according to a report from The Standard. The Spanish goalkeeper missed the Blues’ 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in Sydney, leaving academy product Teddy Sharman-Lowe to take his place from the opening whistle. It came at an awkward point because Sanchez had been building momentum before Chelsea’s next fixtures in Asia.

Xabi Alonso acted quickly. After the match, the Chelsea head coach confirmed that Mike Penders would fly to Hong Kong and join the travelling squad. The 21-year-old Belgian spent last season on loan at Strasbourg and will strengthen Chelsea’s goalkeeping options for matches against Juventus, AC Milan and Johor Darul Ta’zim.

There was better news elsewhere. Mykhailo Mudryk is back after his doping suspension ended on Friday, with Alonso describing the winger’s return as a massive lift for both the dressing room and the player himself.

Chelsea Injury News: Sanchez still has strong reasons to keep his place

Sanchez faced criticism throughout the 2025/26 campaign, yet Alonso still inherits the goalkeeper who started 35 Premier League matches, played 3,041 league minutes, kept nine clean sheets and conceded 49 goals. Across all competitions, he made 45 appearances, featured eight times in the UEFA Champions League and kept three clean sheets.

His numbers with the ball deserve attention. Sanchez completed 69% of his passes, produced one assist and created five chances, a remarkable figure for a goalkeeper. Those statistics explain why Chelsea continue to value his distribution despite recurring questions over his consistency inside the penalty area.

Penders has genuine promise. Even so, stepping straight from a loan spell into the Premier League spotlight would demand plenty from a young goalkeeper still adjusting to Chelsea’s environment.

Scorzo’s opinion: Sanchez’s situation feels far less dramatic than some headlines suggest. One minor injury during pre-season should not suddenly erase a full campaign in which he remained Chelsea’s clear first-choice goalkeeper despite constant debate.

His contract runs until 2030, making a permanent departure difficult unless a sizeable offer arrives. Chelsea have already invested heavily across other areas of the squad, so committing another major fee to a goalkeeper hardly looks like a priority.

Scorzo’s view is straightforward. Sanchez still gives Alonso the safest balance of experience and passing quality, while Penders should push him every day rather than replace him immediately. That competition may prove healthier than another expensive transfer, and Sanchez now has every reason to remind everyone why Chelsea trusted him in the first place.
