The Toffees have reached an agreement worth around £7m for the Danish midfielder, with a medical expected next week.
Everton have reached an agreement in principle with Arsenal to sign Christian Nørgaard, with the fee understood to be in the region of £7million.
The news, first claimed by ‘Del-Boy’ in our forum, then later reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, broke on Saturday afternoon while David Moyes‘ side were in pre-season action against Hamburg. The deal still requires formalising, but the 32-year-old is expected to undergo a medical next week ahead of a move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Nørgaard would become Everton’s fourth addition of the window, following Hayden Hackney’s arrival from Middlesbrough and the permanent deals for Merlin Röhl and Tyrique George.
Filling the Gueye-shaped hole
The logic is not difficult to follow. Idrissa Gueye departed as a free agent at the end of his contract, and Everton have spent the summer looking for a physical presence capable of operating in the No 6 role. James Garner, last season’s Player of the Season, has undergone groin surgery and is only expected back around the start of the campaign, which has left the middle of the pitch looking thinner than anyone at Finch Farm would like three weeks out from the first game.
Nørgaard is not a long-term answer at 32, and nobody is pretending otherwise. What he is, though, is a proven Premier League operator who screens a back four properly, reads danger early and organises those around him – and, at £7m, one who doesn’t swallow a meaningful chunk of the summer budget.
There’s also the leadership question. With Séamus Coleman having left after 16 years, adding a player who captained Brentford through six seasons in the top flight addresses something beyond the tactical. Everton’s midfield options – Garner, Hackney, Tim Iroegbunam, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – are all still short of their peak years. A senior voice in there does no harm at all.
A frustrating year in north London
Nørgaard joined Arsenal from Brentford last summer for £10m plus a further £2m in potential add-ons, and it’s fair to say the move never quite took off. He made 20 appearances in all competitions, only seven of them in the Premier League, and he finishes his time at the Emirates with a title medal from a season in which he was largely a squad man.
That was despite Mikel Merino missing the final three months of the campaign through injury – Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and Myles Lewis-Skelly were all trusted ahead of him. He is into the final year of his contract, and with Arsenal closing in on Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle, a sale suits everyone. The Gunners recoup most of what they paid, which matters more than ever under the new Squad Cost Ratio rules.
Before the Arsenal move, Nørgaard made 196 appearances across six years at Brentford, helping them out of the Championship and then establishing them as a Premier League side. Prior to that came spells with Brøndby, Hamburg and Fiorentina.
The verdict
It isn’t the signing that gets the pulse racing, and it doesn’t solve everything – there’s still obvious work to do elsewhere in this squad before the window shuts. But it’s a sensible bit of business at a sensible price for a position Everton genuinely needed filling, and there’s something to be said for that.
