Mason Burstow has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan after helping Bolton win promotion from League One
Former Sunderland striker Mason Burstow has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan from Hull City.
The 22-year-old will spend the 2026-27 campaign at Hillsborough after helping Bolton Wanderers secure promotion from League One last season. Burstow scored 12 goals during his temporary spell with the Trotters, playing a key role as they reached and won the play-off final.
Sheffield Wednesday will hope Burstow can reproduce that form as they prepare for the new season. The striker arrives with experience across the Premier League and EFL following previous spells with Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Sunderland, Hull City and Bolton.
Burstow said: “The club is in an upward direction and I'm very happy and excited to be part of it. I've got a benchmark now that I've set from last season and I only want to improve and add more goals and get another trophy. The gaffer is very passionate in the way he speaks and his tactical and technical analysis, and the detail, is top. It's going to help me develop my game and add to what I achieved last year. I've played against Wednesday away and home, and the fans are always a big voice. They always seem to out-sing everyone, so I'm glad to be on the other side of it!”
Burstow began his senior career with Charlton after progressing through the London club’s academy. He scored with his first touch in professional football and quickly attracted attention from Chelsea, who completed a move for the young forward in January 2022.
He remained with Charlton on loan for the rest of that season before continuing his development within Chelsea’s system. Burstow later joined Sunderland on loan for the 2023-24 Championship campaign, making 20 appearances in all competitions and scoring once.
His only Sunderland goal came during a 3-1 victory over Stoke City at the Stadium of Light. Burstow’s spell on Wearside proved difficult overall, however, with the striker frequently asked to lead the line during an inconsistent campaign for the Black Cats.
Hull City subsequently signed Burstow from Chelsea on a permanent four-year contract. He made 31 appearances during his first season with the Tigers before moving to Bolton on loan, where he enjoyed the most productive campaign of his senior career. Sheffield Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson believes the forward is continuing to improve after his promotion-winning season.

At 22, his 12 goals in a promotion-winning campaign show that he is on an upward trajectory and we think we are getting an even better version of him because of this. Burstow’s former clubs are Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Sunderland, Hull City and Bolton Wanderers. He will now join his new Sheffield Wednesday teammates at Middlewood Road as preparations continue for the 2026-27 campaign in League One.
