The former Sunderland loanee has completed a surprise Chelsea move after being left out of England’s World Cup squad
Former Sunderland loanee Danny Welbeck has completed a surprise move to Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 35-year-old striker has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge, although neither club has disclosed the fee involved in the permanent transfer.
Welbeck arrives after the most productive Premier League campaign of his career, scoring 13 goals across 37 appearances for Brighton last season. Only three English players registered more goals in the division. The experienced forward becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
Welbeck said: “When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride. I know a few of the boys already, and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection. I’ve got that fire in my belly, and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
The move represents a significant departure from the recruitment strategy employed by Chelsea’s owners since their takeover in 2022, with the London club predominantly targeting younger players on long-term contracts. Welbeck instead arrives with extensive experience at the highest level, having represented Manchester United, Arsenal, Watford, Brighton and England during a senior career spanning almost two decades.
He also spent the 2010-11 season on loan at Sunderland from Manchester United, becoming an important member of Steve Bruce’s side. Welbeck made 26 Premier League appearances and scored six goals during his campaign on Wearside, forming part of an exciting Sunderland attack alongside Darren Bent, Asamoah Gyan and Stéphane Sessègnon. His performances included goals against Chelsea and Everton, while he also struck the winner against Bolton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light.
Welbeck returned to Manchester United following the conclusion of his loan before later joining Arsenal for £16million in September 2014. He spent five years in north London and then had one season with Watford before moving to Brighton in 2020. Welbeck has also scored 16 goals in 42 senior appearances for England. His most recent international appearance came in 2018, and he was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
